Dhaka: Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed has announced that the government is implementing special initiatives to boost rural employment as a strategy to enhance economic dynamism.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Salehuddin Ahmed emphasized that the current interim government is focused on ensuring the continuous operation of production processes in mills and factories, alongside creating employment opportunities. In an interview with BSS, he highlighted the government's efforts since taking office to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs), recognizing their potential to generate substantial employment.
Dr Salehuddin, who is also a former governor of the central bank, pointed out that financing issues have been a challenge for SMEs. In response, directives have been issued to the Bangladesh Bank to increase lending to the CMSMEs, acknowledging their critical role in the national economy. Additionally, smaller projects under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) aim to create rural jobs through initiatives in local infrastructure, such as bridges, culverts, and environmental projects.
He further noted that the economy is showing signs of recovery, with some dynamism already evident, although the private sector remains cautious. Despite this, there has been no abrupt halt in activities, and the government is working to simplify financial access, streamline tax procedures, and facilitate imports, including machinery.
Addressing financial crimes, Dr Salehuddin mentioned ongoing actions against money laundering. The Anti-Corruption Commission and Bangladesh Bank are investigating these activities, especially involving major companies. A dedicated task force is gathering information, and international legal procedures are being followed to recover laundered funds. Assistance from a British company and other entities is being sought for technical support.
The adviser concluded by stating that efforts to recover and repatriate laundered money have commenced, with investigations targeting 11 to 12 major companies.
