Speakers Call for Conservation of Local Fish Varieties at National Fisheries Week

Khulna: Speakers at a meeting here today called for protecting local varieties of fishes, emphasizing that native species are integral to the region’s heritage and culture. They expressed these views during the closing ceremony of the National Fisheries Week held in Khulna.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was organized by the Khulna District Fisheries Office at the conference room of the Divisional Fisheries Office. The event featured Director of Fisheries Zahangir Alam as the chief guest. The speakers highlighted that 70 to 80 percent of shrimp are exported from the Khulna region annually. They noted the southern region of the country as fertile ground for fish farming, playing a significant role in the national economy.



The speakers stressed the importance of expediting activities in sanctuaries to boost the production of native fish species. The event was chaired by District Fisheries Officer Badruzzaman and included addresses from Deputy Director of the Directorate of Fisheries Division Bipul Kumar Basak, Quality Assurance Manager Zahidul Hasan, and fish farm owner Sheikh Rezanul Islam.



A T M Towfiq Mahmud, Senior Assistant Director of the District Fisheries Office, presented an evaluation paper on the seven-day program of Fisheries Week, outlining the initiatives and activities undertaken to promote fish conservation and farming.
