Rangamati: A Rangamati court on Tuesday sentenced a man and his cousin to death for the murder of the man's father in 2017. Rangamati District and Sessions Judge Md Ahsan Tarek delivered the verdict, sentencing Sohel Chakma, 32, and his cousin Alomoy Chakma, 32, both residents of Sajek in Rangamati, to death. The court also imposed a fine of Tk 50,000 on each of the convicts. Notably, Alomoy was tried in absentia.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the prosecution detailed that Shanti Lal Chakma, 56, the father of convict Sohel Chakma, was brutally killed by his son and nephew on August 6, 2017. The crime occurred in the Uttar Bhaibonchhara area, where the victim was strangled and hacked to death. After committing the murder, the assailants disposed of Shanti Lal's body by dumping it into the Gangaram River.

The police later retrieved Shanti Lal's decomposed body from the Kachalong River, nine days following the murder. The incident led to the filing of a case against the accused, after which the police submitted a chargesheet implicating Sohel and Alomoy in the heinous crime.
