Kaliganj: The body of Nazrul Islam, a 32-year-old Bangladeshi expatriate from Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah, who was killed in Malaysia, was brought back to his home village and laid to rest today. The return of his body to Gobordanga village in Kaliganj occurred early this morning, 18 days following the incident.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the village was engulfed in grief as mourners gathered to pay their last respects. Nazrul was buried at the family graveyard amidst a somber atmosphere. The body had arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka late Friday night aboard a Malaysia Airlines flight. Following the completion of legal formalities, the body was handed over to his family around 4:00 am. In a gesture of support, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment provided a cheque of Tk 35,000 to Nazrul’s mother to assist with burial expenses.

Family members revealed that Nazrul Islam was hacked to death over a business dispute in Malaysia, and his body was subsequently burned by the assailants. Another Bangladeshi, Kohinur Begum, was also killed in the same incident. Nazrul, who was the son of Motaleb Hossain of Gobordanga village, had moved to Malaysia in 2018 seeking better opportunities.

The tragic event has left the village in mourning, with family members and locals expressing profound sorrow. According to the family, Nazrul had successfully established an integrated farm in Malaysia, raising cattle, goats, poultry, and other animals. They claimed that envious local business partners orchestrated the killing due to his success.

Zahir Uddin, Nazrul’s brother, mentioned ongoing disputes with business associates and previous attempts on Nazrul’s life. “He was planning to return home permanently soon, but was killed before he could do so,” he stated.

Officer-in-Charge of Kaliganj Police Station Jellal Hossain noted that they lack direct information as the incident occurred abroad. He mentioned that Nazrul’s father has appealed to the Bangladesh government for justice, and necessary steps will be taken by the relevant authorities. No formal complaint has been filed with the police yet.
