Six remanded in case over Sramik League leader Opu murder

A Dhaka court today placed six men on two-day remand each in a case lodged over murder of Sramik League leader Opu Islam in the capital’s Badda area.

The six accused are- Md Shahadat Hossain, Md Morshed Hossain, Md Hamidul Islam, Sonet Sarkar, Mehedi Hasan and Shahjahan Kabir.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Ahmed passed the order as police produced the six before the court and pleaded to place them on seven days of remand each in the case.

According to the case documents, Opu had an altercation with Dhaka International University students Sonet Sarkar, Mehedi Hasan and Shahjahan Kabir at around 7pm on June 9 in Badda area. They forcibly took him to an under-construction building and beat him there. An hour later, the accused called Opu there again in the name of resolving the matter, and again beat him. At one stage, threw him from the fifth floor, leaving him seriously injured.

Locals rushed Opu to a nearby hospital, where the attending doctors declared him dead. Opu’s brother Khorshed filed the case with Badda Police Station the next day.
