Dhaka: A court here today ordered the incarceration of former lawmaker and eminent singer Momtaz Begum following the conclusion of her four-day remand in connection with a murder case.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Metropolitan Magistrate Minhajul Islam mandated the decision after Investigating Officer Monirul Islam presented Momtaz before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court. The officer appealed for her confinement until the investigation concludes.

Attorneys representing the former parliament member submitted a bail plea, which was subsequently rejected by the magistrate, leading to her detention in jail.

Detectives apprehended Momtaz from the Dhanmondi area of the city on May 12, subsequently placing her on a four-day remand related to the Sagor murder case under Mirpur Model Thana.

The case involves the death of Sagor, a teenage boy who was shot near Mirpur intersection on July 29 during a procession associated with an anti-discrimination students’ movement.

Sagor’s mother, Beauty Akhter, filed the murder case with Mirpur Model Thana on November 27, accusing Momtaz Begum along with 242 others, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the prime accused.
