Patuakhali: In a joint operation conducted by the National Security Intelligence (NSI) and the upazila administration in Galachipa, authorities seized approximately 50 lakh pieces of illegal shrimp fries, locally known as Renupona, on Wednesday afternoon. The operation targeted the Sagardi Road area of Galachipa upazila, where officials discovered shrimp fries of both Galda and Bagda species.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the estimated market value of the seized shrimp fries is nearly Taka 2 crore. During the operation, law enforcement agencies also seized a truck allegedly used for transporting the fries, along with 40 drums intended for storage.
However, the truck driver, helper, and four to five workers managed to escape during the raid. Galachipa Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ijazul Haque stated that the recovered shrimp fries were released into the Ramnabad River to protect the aquatic ecosystem. The seized truck was handed over to the Upazila Fisheries Department.
The UNO further mentioned that the upazila administration and the Fisheries Department are continuing legal proceedings in connection with the incident.
