Shama Obaed Advocates for Enhanced Lithuanian Trade and Investment in Bangladesh

Dhaka:State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has called for increased trade diversification and urged Lithuania to boost its imports of Bangladeshi products such as pharmaceuticals, biodegradable jute goods, leather products, agro-products, furniture, and plastics.

According to United News of Bangladesh, during a meeting with Lithuanian Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Vidmantas Verbickas, Shama Obaed highlighted the investment opportunities available in Bangladesh. She invited Lithuanian investors to explore sectors like agro-processing, renewable energy, IT, cybersecurity, and waste management.

The discussions between Shama Obaed and Vidmantas Verbickas also covered potential cooperation in addressing issues such as environmental degradation, climate change, energy security, and food security. They explored a broad range of topics including education, manpower, migration, visa facilitation, women empowerment, sports, and culture.

Shama Obaed recalled the historical ties established between Bangladesh and Lithuania in 1992 and emphasized the importance of expanding these mutually beneficial relations. She noted the government's commitment to a 'Bangladesh First' foreign policy under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The meeting underscored the significance of enhancing soft diplomacy, particularly in the IT sector, and the importance of sharing expertise. Both sides agreed on the need for high-level visits, business delegation exchanges, youth and student programs, cultural exchanges, and tourism cooperation to deepen bilateral engagement and strengthen people-to-people connections. They also recognized the opportunity to further develop the untapped potential in Bangladesh-Lithuania relations.
