Dhaka:State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam has issued a stern warning that strict action will be taken against project directors of Dhaka WASA's ongoing projects if no visible progress is made within the next two months. He emphasized that officials who fail to deliver results will be removed from their positions.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the state minister delivered this warning while serving as the chief guest at a review meeting on Dhaka WASA's overall activities. The meeting took place at the organization's headquarters in Karwan Bazar. Shahe Alam highlighted the unacceptable delays in project implementation, urging officials to expedite their efforts.
Shahe Alam specifically instructed the completion of the pipeline connection project from the Dasherkandi Sewage Treatment Plant to Gulshan, Banani, and Baridhara as quickly as possible. He also called for the prompt preparation of a Development Project Proposal to establish a water supply network in the Purbachal area.
Addressing the role of WASA boards, Shahe Alam noted that although existing laws provide for these boards, the government retains the power to form or dissolve them. A ministry review found that WASA boards were often hindering public service activities, leading to a government decision to amend the law to abolish WASA boards across Bangladesh.
Expressing dissatisfaction with WASA's slow progress, the state minister pointed out that Dhaka's daily water demand and supply currently stand at 314 crore litres each. He criticized the lack of significant initiatives or progress over the last seven months, describing the situation as disappointing and stressing the need for timely measures to address water shortages.
Shahe Alam also discussed water sources, revealing that 74% of Dhaka WASA's water comes from groundwater. He urged a reduction in groundwater dependency to 20-25% by accelerating surface water-based projects to mitigate earthquake risks.
On financial matters, Alam emphasized that Dhaka WASA must enhance its revenue generation while maintaining service standards, reducing reliance on foreign loans. He called for improved automation in meter reading and billing, and a new organizational structure planning for water demand in 2050.
The minister also ordered action against illegal water connections and warned against interference from political influences disrupting public services. To prevent water wastage, awareness campaigns were recommended.
Reiterating his expectations, Shahe Alam announced he would revisit in two months to assess WASA's progress, anticipating significant improvements in water-related services for Dhaka residents. The meeting was chaired by Dhaka WASA Managing Director Dr. Md. Moniruzzaman and attended by senior officials and various organizational representatives.
