Dhaka: Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam today called for the immediate release of Bangladesh's noted photographer Shahidul Alam, along with others who were reportedly intercepted by Israeli forces from the Global Sumud Flotilla for Gaza. "We demand the immediate release of Shahidul and all others from the flotilla," Shafiqul stated in a post on his verified Facebook account.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Shafiqul Alam expressed that their thoughts and prayers are with Shahidul Alam, a world-renowned photographer and human rights activist. In a recent Facebook post, Shahidul shared that the flotilla he was aboard had been intercepted at sea, leading to their alleged kidnapping by Israeli forces. Shafiqul emphasized the courage and resilience Shahidul has always shown, particularly during his previous imprisonment under the Hasina government, and expressed confidence that these qualities would help him through this ordeal.
Shafiqul further urged that while Shahidul's safety is paramount, the broader context of ongoing devastation and genocide in Gaza should not be overlooked. He stressed the importance of maintaining global focus on the catastrophic loss of life and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing it as a profound moral test for the international community that requires attention, accountability, and action.
He concluded by commending Shahidul's unyielding spirit as a symbol of Bangladesh and expressed hope for the safety of Shahidul and the rest of the team.
