Dhaka: International Crimes Tribunal (IC) Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam has announced that seven individuals, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, have been sentenced to death. The sentences were delivered after the charges against them were proven beyond doubt. The Chief Prosecutor shared these details with journalists this afternoon following the tribunal's decision in the case concerning crimes against humanity during the July 2024 Mass Uprising.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam revealed that each accused faced four charges, and the tribunal's decision was based on the overwhelming evidence against them. With the charges confirmed, the tribunal delivered the death sentences, marking a significant moment in the pursuit of justice for crimes against humanity. The prosecutor expressed gratitude for the verdict and reiterated the commitment to arresting the absconding convicts.
The tribunal, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, announced the judgment earlier in the day, sentencing seven prominent figures, including Obaidul Quader and several other political leaders, to death. The tribunal ordered the confiscation of 50 percent of the movable and immovable properties of the accused, intending to compensate the victims' families through the July Foundation or other statutory organizations.
Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam mentioned that the government would take necessary steps to implement the judgment, including identifying and confiscating properties owned by the convicts. He highlighted a 30-day period for appeal following the publication of the judgment, during which no property confiscation or related measures would be undertaken. However, post the appeal period, legal actions would proceed without impediment.
