Tangail: A seven-day tree plantation campaign and tree fair commenced in Tangail district today, under the banner "Let's do planned afforestation, build a green Bangladesh." The initiative was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque at Shaheed Smriti Municipal Park this morning, in a joint effort by the district administration and the Forest Department.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the fair features a total of 47 stalls, each displaying a variety of saplings and tree-related materials. The opening ceremony was preceded by a vibrant procession that started from the Deputy Commissioner's office, adding a festive spirit to the occasion.
Divisional Forest Officer Dr. Abu Naser Mohsin Hossain presided over the inaugural ceremony, which saw participation from various officials and dignitaries. Among those who addressed the gathering were Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Abdullah Al Mamun, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nahida Akhter, and President of Tangail Journalists' Union Shamsadul Akhter Shamim.
The event also featured insights from academics, including Professor Dr. A.S.S. Saifullah, Chairman of the Department of Environmental Science and Resource Management at Maulana Bhashani University of Science and Technology, and Dr. Lutfunnesa Bari, Professor of the Department of Food Technology and Mutation Science. The campaign aims to promote environmental awareness and encourage community involvement in afforestation efforts.
