Dhaka: Selim Hossain, a key figure in Bangladesh's boxing scene, has been a member of the national boxing team since 2010, earning accolades and gold medals in various national competitions. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Selim, who also serves in the Bangladesh Army, has represented the nation in numerous international tournaments, gaining recognition for Bangladesh on the global stage. Born in 1992 in Rajshahi, Selim's interest in sports began early. Despite familial opposition, he pursued boxing, inspired by his uncle. His dedication was recognized in 2023 when he was named Best Sportsman of the Year by the Bangladesh Sports Press Association. Selim believes that boxing in Bangladesh holds significant potential both locally and internationally, provided the sport receives the necessary support. He aspires for boxers to attain the same respect as cricketers and footballers in the nation. In an interview with BSS, he emphasized the need for proper guidance, facilities, and logistical support to nurture the country's boxing talent. Selim recounted his journey to the national boxing team, which began with his early boxing endeavors and subsequent recruitment by the Bangladesh Army in 2010. His performance in local boxing camps and success in the Bangladesh Games earned him a spot on the national team. Internationally, Selim shared his experiences from the World Military Championship in Russia, the 2022 Commonwealth Games in England, and the 19th Asian Games in China. His close match against Japan's Shudai Harada in the Asian Games quarterfinals highlighted his potential to end Bangladesh's 37-year individual medal drought in the Games. Domestically, Selim's achievements include gold medals in the 9th Bangladesh Games in 2021 and the 37th Senior Boxing Championship in 2022. However, he noted the lack of recent national competitions organized by the federation. Selim chose boxing as a practical means to represent his country and secure a government job, given the financial constraints of his middle- class background. He expressed optimism about winning a medal in the upcoming South Asian Games, contingent on adequate preparation and training opportunities abroad.
