DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld a High Court verdict acquitting businessman Gias Uddin Al Mamun of corruption charges. This decision was made in a case initially filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), marking a significant moment in the protracted legal battle. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the full bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, rendered this decision by allowing a review petition submitted by Mamun. The High Court had previously acquitted Mamun of the charges, but the ACC contested this outcome by appealing to the Appellate Division. The apex court had initially ordered that the case be reheard at the High Court, prompting Mamun's legal team to file a review petition against this order. The case dates back to May 8, 2007, when the ACC lodged a complaint at Cantonment Police Station after Mamun failed to present his wealth statement. The ACC accused him of amassing illegal wealth amounting to Taka 101.73 crore. Subs equently, on March 27, 2008, a lower court convicted Mamun, sentencing him to ten years in prison and imposing a fine of Taka 10 lakh.
