Dhaka: Some stars arrive, shine brightly and disappear with time. A rare few, however, remain suspended in the memory of generations, their presence refusing to fade even decades after they are gone. In Bangladesh's cinematic history, few such stars have left an imprint as enduring as Salman Shah, and today marks his 30th death anniversary.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Salman Shah, born Chowdhury Mohammad Shahriar Emon during the turbulent period of Bangladesh's Liberation War in 1971, passed away on September 6, 1996, at the young age of 25. In a career spanning only around four years, Salman Shah became one of the defining stars of 1990s Bangladeshi cinema. He made his debut with 'Keyamat Theke Keyamat' in 1993 and continued to win audiences with films like 'Sotter Mrittu Nei', 'Shujon Shokhi', 'Ei Ghor Ei Shongshar', and 'Anondo Osru'.
His on-screen pairing with Shabnur gained particular popularity, and his performances with other leading actresses, including Moushumi, Shabnaz, Lima, and Shahnaz, further cemented his status as a romantic hero. Beyond his acting, his fashion, hairstyles, and effortless screen presence made him a trendsetter whose influence persists in popular culture.
However, the mystery surrounding his untimely death has lingered for three decades. Salman Shah was discovered unconscious at his residence in New Eskaton on September 6, 1996, and was later pronounced dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Investigations did not establish foul play, with the Criminal Investigation Department and Police Bureau of Investigation concluding it was suicide. Nevertheless, his family has consistently disputed these findings, insisting he was murdered.
The case took a significant turn in October 2025 when a Dhaka court ordered a murder case to be filed regarding Salman Shah's death. Eleven individuals, including his former wife Samira Haque, businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai, and actor Ashraful Haque Don, were implicated. The investigation is ongoing, with Don arrested in August this year. The deadline for the investigation report has been postponed multiple times, with the latest set for September 29.
As the 30th anniversary of Salman Shah's death is commemorated, his legacy remains undiminished. For those who grew up watching him, he remains the young star encapsulated in his films, eternally at the peak of his charm. Social media has seen an outpouring of tributes from his devoted fans, demonstrating that Salman Shah, one of Dhallywood's biggest 'what-ifs', continues to captivate audiences and hold a special place in their hearts.
