Dhaka:Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has urged the nation's universities to take a leading role in developing a technology-driven, merit-based society to tackle 21st-century challenges and realize the vision of a modern Bangladesh. He emphasized the importance of moving beyond traditional education to focus on technological knowledge, innovation, and intellectual development.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister made these remarks while addressing a discussion at Jagannath University's central auditorium in Dhaka, celebrating the university's 21st founding anniversary. He called on universities to foster innovative research, adopt modern IT practices, and promote merit-based education.
Salahuddin highlighted the continuous need for public welfare initiatives, stressing that development activities should persist despite political changes. He advocated for the guiding principle "Bangladesh first, people first," stating that a country's identity is shaped by its people's rights and participation.
The minister recalled the history of Jagannath University, noting that efforts to transform the institution began in 1995 through initiatives by Shaheed student leader Nasiruddin Pintu and others, with support from former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. The transformation was completed in 2005 when the BNP government passed an act upgrading Jagannath University College to a full-fledged university.
He also mentioned the ongoing construction of a modern campus in Keraniganj, covering 200 acres, and assured students that the government is open to addressing their reasonable demands. Emphasizing the need for qualitative improvements in education, he stated that academic certificates alone cannot ensure national development.
Salahuddin stressed the importance of universities functioning as centers of intellectual freedom and research. He underscored the significance of technical and vocational education, urging students to align their skills with modern workforce demands. He highlighted the critical role of the semiconductor industry, AI, and technology-driven economies in maintaining Bangladesh's competitive edge.
The minister encouraged the younger generation to uphold the spirit of the 2024 mass uprising and maintain national unity to build a prosperous Bangladesh. The event was chaired by Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Rais Uddin, with National Parliament Whip Miah Nuruddin Ahmad Apu and Madaripur-3 lawmaker Anisur Rahman Talukdar as special guests.
To celebrate Jagannath University Day 2026, the university organized events including a national flag hoisting, rally, fine arts exhibition, discussion, prayer gathering, cultural performances, and a concert.
