Narail: Cultural Affairs Minister Advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury today praised the late renowned painter S M Sultan, describing him as an artist deeply connected to the soil and its people, whose work transcended the boundaries of Narail and Bangladesh. He emphasized Sultan's role in showcasing Bangladesh to the world through his art, highlighting the painter's patriotism and significant contribution to enhancing the country's image.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister expressed these sentiments while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion and the Sultan Sammanona-2026 awarding ceremony, marking the 103rd birth anniversary of S M Sultan at the Narail District Shilpakala Academy. Nitai Roy Chowdhury spoke of the current government's efforts to support artists, poets, writers, and cultural activists, noting initiatives like introducing folk theatre and other cultural activities to counter subculture.
The minister also underscored the Culture Ministry's commitment to promoting rural cultural activities and sports. He encouraged the involvement of children and teenagers in drawing, emphasizing that engaging in quality painting and cultural activities would aid their mental development.
During the event, the Culture Affairs Minister presented the Sultan Sammanona-2026 to Dr Md Abdus Sattar, a prominent artist. He also visited key sites associated with S M Sultan, including Shishuswarg, the Sultan Memorial Museum, and the Art Gallery.
The event was presided over by Dr Mohammad Abdul Salam, President of the S M Sultan Memorial Museum and Narail Deputy Commissioner. Among the attendees were Narail-1 lawmaker Bishwas Jahangir Alam, Narail-2 lawmaker Ataur Rahman Bachchu, and Culture Ministry Secretary Kaniz Mowla. Rezauddin Stalin, Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, participated as the guest of honour, while Professor Reza Asad Al Huda Anupam delivered the keynote speech on S M Sultan's connection to life and social reality.
Additional dignitaries and admirers joined in a tribute and doa programme at Sultan's grave, with various officials and community leaders in attendance. The daylong commemorative events, organized under the patronage of the Culture Ministry, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, the district administration, and the S M Sultan Memorial Museum, featured Quran Khatam, drawing competitions, art exhibitions, and cultural programmes.
S M Sultan, a recipient of numerous accolades including the Ekushey Padak and the Independence Award, is remembered for his humanistic and non-communal outlook. His legacy is preserved at the S M Sultan Memorial Museum, established at his ancestral home in Narail.
