Rajshahi: Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) is set to celebrate its Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years, along with its 6th convocation. The decision was taken at the 157th meeting of the university’s Academic Council on Saturday.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the convocation and Diamond Jubilee will be celebrated in a grand manner towards the end of this year, with participation from all former and current students. Highlighting the importance of the convocation, the university stated that RUET’s 5th convocation was last held on December 1, 2019. Since then, students from multiple academic sessions have completed their degrees.
The meeting also discussed and decided to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee on the occasion of the university’s 60th anniversary. The meeting noted that the present RUET began its journey in 1964 as ‘Engineering College, Rajshahi’. Later, through a presidential ordinance on March 12, 1986, the Engineering College was transformed into ‘Bangladesh Institute of Technology’ (BIT), Rajshahi, effective from July 1, 1986.
Subsequently, under Act No. 32 of 2003, published in the gazette on July 19, 2003, by the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, BIT Rajshahi was upgraded and transformed into ‘Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology’ (RUET). This was done to keep pace with the advancing world in various fields of engineering and technology, achieve parity, and create and expand opportunities for higher education and modern research at the national level. The institution began operating as RUET on September 1, 2003.
Notably, the institution completed 60 years in 2024. Many renowned engineers who earned degrees from this institution are now working in important organizations at home and abroad. Regarding this, RUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. S M Abdur Razzak said the upcoming convocation and the alumni reunion on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee are going to be a very glorious and joyful moment for the RUET family.
This event will not only celebrate the success of our graduates but also create a unique opportunity to rebuild strong bonds between former and current students. “I hope this grand gathering will inspire us all and further accelerate the university’s progress. I sincerely invite everyone to be part of this historic celebration,” he added.
