Rajshahi University (RU) has arranged a day-long workshop on accreditation for its teachers with the main thrust of developing their capacity to evaluate and accredit the academic programmes being conducted in engineering faculty.

Initiated by the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), the workshop titled "Compliance of BAC Accreditation Standards and Criteria" was held at RU IQAC conference hall today.

Bangladesh Accreditation Council (BAC) supported the programme.

Pro-vice-chancellor Prof Sultan-Ul-Islam addressed the opening session as the chief guest, while IQAC Director Dulal Chandra Roy was in the chair.

Prof Abdur Razzaque from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Independent University, Bangladesh, and IQAC Additional Director Prof Abdur Rashid Sarker conducted the technical sessions as resource persons disseminating their expertise on the issue.

Prof Sultan-Ul-Islam told the participants that the University Grant Commission has developed a national qualifications framework of higher studies for BAC which would provide guidance to students pursuing higher education.

With this breakthrough, any student can get information about the learning process and skills before their admission or studies in different sectors.

It will also help maintain international standards in Bangladesh's education system, he hoped.

The framework covers all sectors including skills, technical, vocational, and academic sectors. It was designed based on a credit point system and qualification levels.

The country's higher education system is designed under three structures--bachelors, masters' and doctoral degrees.

Prof Abdur Razzaque urged the participating teachers to make the best use of their knowledge acquired from the workshop, in their practical fields.

In addition to the faculty dean and departmental chairmen, 56 teachers from five departments under the engineering faculty joined the workshop.

They were given ideas on how to prepare self-assessment reports and evaluate those to get accreditation of their academic programmes.
