Rangpur:Health experts at a seminar have shared that Rangpur Medical College and Hospital (RpMCH) performed surgeries on 1,200 breast cancer patients over the past year. This marks the highest number of such surgeries conducted by the hospital's surgery department, reflecting the rising number of breast cancer cases in the Rangpur division.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the seminar was part of a day-long program organized by RpMCH's Surgery Department to observe "Breast Cancer Awareness Month-2026." The event included a cake-cutting ceremony and was inaugurated by the college principal, Professor Dr. Md Anwar Hossain, on the Rangpur Medical College campus.
During the seminar, experts highlighted the lack of awareness leading to delays in seeking treatment, often resulting in fatal outcomes. Assistant Professor Dr. Shariful Islam Nantu moderated the session, while RpMCH Director Brigadier General Ashikur Rahman and other officials addressed the attendees. Women who had recovered from breast cancer after surgery at RpMCH also spoke at the event.
The hospital's Surgery Department has established an outpatient clinic dedicated to breast cancer, providing screenings and guidance on prevention. Experts advised individuals aged 30 to 50 or older to consult a surgeon if they notice persistent lumps or changes in their breasts.
Associate Professor Dr. Syeda Shahnaz Nasrullah Ellora emphasized that timely treatment can lead to recovery and a normal life, countering the misconception that breast cancer is invariably fatal. She noted the absence of a radiotherapy machine at RpMCH, which would allow for less invasive surgeries. However, the hospital currently offers surgery and chemotherapy for breast cancer treatment.
The event concluded with a rally through the Rangpur Medical College campus.
