Dhaka: Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Water Resources Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today urged law enforcement and stakeholder agencies to collaborate effectively to ensure the Sundarbans remains free from criminal activities. She emphasized the necessity of coordinated efforts over isolated actions to safeguard this unique ecosystem, according to an official handout.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rizwana addressed a virtual stakeholder consultation focusing on the challenges and prospects of managing the Sundarbans. She stressed the importance of integrated action involving various agencies including the Forest Department, Navy, RAB, Coast Guard, BGB, Police, and local community patrol groups. The meeting offered a platform to discuss ongoing projects, existing problems, and future strategies for managing the Sundarbans.
Key challenges were identified by Rizwana, such as threats to local livelihoods, forest banditry, deer poaching, plastic pollution, forest fires, toxic fishing practices, illegal entry, and unauthorized vehicle movement. She advocated for a comprehensive and collaborative action plan to tackle these issues effectively.
Rizwana stated, “The Sundarbans is not just a forest – it is a part of our life. Its survival ensures the safety of our environment, biodiversity, and the lives of coastal communities.” She also highlighted ongoing initiatives like the Tiger Response Team, Dolphin Team, and regular patrol units as active measures in protecting the forest. Moreover, she called for the immediate finalization of the Eco-Tourism Guideline and the Sundarbans Visit Policy to promote sustainable tourism.
The event featured speeches from Dr. Farhina Ahmed, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and Md. Amir Hossain Chowdhury, Chief Conservator of Forests. A keynote presentation was delivered by Md. Imran Ahmed, Conservator of Forests, Khulna region. Remarks were also made by the Divisional Commissioner of Khulna, and representatives from RAB, Coast Guard, Bangladesh Navy, local district administration, police, Department of Environment, Water Development Board, and Fire Service and Civil Defence.
