Dhaka: Members of the Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn) have successfully arrested the ringleader of the notorious ‘Ogyan Party’ gang at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The apprehended individual has been identified as 48-year-old Tajul Islam.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the arrest was carried out by a team led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Fouzul Kabir Moin. During a press briefing held on Sunday, Anita Rani Sutradhar, the additional superintendent of APBn (operation), provided details about the operation. Following Tajul Islam’s arrest, a subsequent raid at a hotel in the Darussalam area of Dhaka led to the recovery of various items. These included two mobile phones, Tk 2,23,000 in cash, 53.50 Saudi riyals, one Turkish lira, and items belonging to victim Arafat Hossain.
Additionally, 15 sedative tablets were discovered in the accused’s possession. Anita Rani explained that on May 16, victim Arafat Hossain, aged 18, became unconscious after drinking coffee offered by Tajul Islam at the airport. Arafat was there to bid farewell to his cousin and fell victim to the gang’s tactics in the departure area.
During initial interrogation, Tajul Islam confessed to the modus operandi of the gang. They frequent bus and railway stations, engaging potential victims in conversation to build trust. Subsequently, they lace drinks with sedatives, rendering their targets unconscious, and then proceed to steal their belongings.
A legal case has been filed in connection with the incident.
