Expressing deep concern over the death of a businessman in police custody in Lakhsmipur, Manabadhiker Songskriti Foundation (MSF), a human rights organisation, demanded legal steps against those responsible for the death after fair investigation.

“It is the duty of police to ensure security to people under their custody. The death of a man in police custody is a serious issue, so it should be properly investigated. MSF is demanding legal steps against those involved in the killing after a fair probe,” said a press release of MSF on Thursday.

Earlier on Wednesday evening, a 45-year-old businessman in Lakshmipur, identified as Abdul Kuddus, was arrested by police in a cheque dishonor case.

Later, Kuddus was taken to Sadar hospital around 10pm after he complained of chest pain where he died at 11pm, according to the news released to the media.

Police said Kuddus suffered cardiac arrest after arrest and died in the hospital.

The reason behind the death of Abdul Kuddus will be properly investigated, said additional police super Mimtanur Rahman.

The rights group also demanded the disclosure of the medical steps taken by police after the victim’s chest pain.
