Dhaka: BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan today emphasized the need for the Election Commission (EC) to appoint its own officials as returning officers for the upcoming 13th National Parliament Election, rather than relying on the district administration. He expressed this view during a dialogue at the EC headquarters in Agargaon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Moyeen Khan represented the BNP during the talks and stated that parties opposing the current regime have been united for the past decade and a half with the aim of ensuring a free and fair election. He urged the EC to take a firm stand, highlighting that the Constitution empowers the Commission and there is no reason for it to remain submissive.
He further explained that candidates have a primary responsibility to adhere to the rules and the electoral code of conduct, noting there is no disagreement on this matter. Moyeen Khan also commented on the announced election schedule, indicating there is limited scope for change and acknowledging that while various recommendations were made, not all were reflected.
Moyeen Khan voiced concerns over the formulation of excessive rules and regulations, arguing that it could lead to more violations. He highlighted that unless people correct themselves, agreements are futile, and unclear punitive provisions could exacerbate the problem. Furthermore, he discussed the impact of artificial intelligence and misinformation, suggesting that the digital age has opened new avenues for expression and misuse.
He emphasized the critical role of the EC during this period in Bangladesh and urged the Commission to fully utilize its manpower. Moyeen Khan acknowledged that while previous dialogues have had mixed outcomes, the process is still welcomed. He reaffirmed the BNP's commitment to participating in the election in full compliance with the EC's code of conduct, signifying the party's dedication to a fair electoral process.
The senior BNP leader arrived at the EC office at 2 pm to engage in the dialogue with the Commission.
