New york: Just off the coast of New York’s famous Hamptons beaches, marine researcher Greg Metzger reels in one of the day’s most impressive catches – a young but powerful sand tiger shark. Working quickly, Metzger and another researcher secure the sharp-toothed female shark alongside their boat, collect tissue samples, and attach small tracking devices before releasing it back into the ocean. Metzger noted the shark’s tough skin was strong enough to damage a surgical-grade scalpel.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Metzger and other scientists are catching, tagging, and releasing different species of sharks to better understand their populations and movements around Long Island. The research is also providing insights into one of the world’s few confirmed nurseries for great white sharks, where large numbers of young sharks spend their early years feeding and growing. Other recognised great white shark nursery areas are located off the coasts of California, Mexico, and Australia.
Metzger, who teaches marine science at Southampton High School, expressed hope that their work will help change public perceptions of sharks. Many people fear sharks, but he emphasized that they are far more complex than the ‘mindless eating machines’ often depicted in popular culture.
Researchers use various electronic tags to monitor the sharks. Some tags send acoustic signals detected by monitoring stations along the coast, while others record data such as water depth and temperature before detaching from the animal. The tracking data reveals that some sharks travel vast distances throughout the year. Bradley Peterson, a marine scientist at Stony Brook University, noted that sharks tagged near Long Island have been detected in waters off North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico before returning north.
Frank Quevedo, executive director of the South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center, explained that warmer coastal waters might be encouraging more shark species to move north during the summer. Recently, more spinner sharks, blacktip sharks, and bull sharks have been observed in the area. Despite this, Metzger emphasized that sharks have always been present in Long Island waters, but modern technology, such as drones and mobile phone cameras, has made them more visible.
Scientists are particularly interested in the young great white sharks that use the waters off Long Island as a nursery. According to Quevedo, newborn great whites can measure about 4 feet (1.2 meters) and weigh up to 80 pounds (36 kilograms). These young sharks receive no maternal care and must survive independently from birth. The shallow coastal waters provide a feeding ground while avoiding larger predators.
As they mature, great white sharks move north in search of larger prey, particularly seals along the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. However, warming waters may be prompting young great whites to move into New England earlier, potentially bringing them closer to adult sharks.
The research also aims to support shark conservation efforts. Quevedo highlighted that the release of the film Jaws spurred a rise in recreational shark fishing, including the hunting of great whites off the Hamptons. Since great white sharks do not reproduce until their 20s or later, killing younger sharks can significantly impact their populations. Conservation efforts have helped some shark populations recover, though their numbers remain below historical levels. Researchers stress that protecting sharks is crucial for maintaining healthy marine ecosystems and the balance of the ocean environment.
