Dhaka: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today stated that the nation has repeatedly faced conspiracies and plots aimed at stalling its progress in various fields. 'Martyred Intellectuals Day is an extremely tragic day for us. Repeated conspiracies and plots were carried out to prevent the people of this country from advancing in knowledge, science, and education,' he addressed during a discussion organized by BNP at the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh, in the city.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul highlighted the tragic events of December 14, 1971, when Bangladesh's brightest minds were brutally murdered through a well-orchestrated plan. This, he said, was a deep conspiracy to strip the nation of its intellectual capital just days before gaining independence. Fakhrul paid homage to the martyred intellectuals of 1971, with members of the BNP National Standing Committee and central leaders present at the event.
Fakhrul noted that the younger generation, particularly those under 30, might not fully grasp the gravity of that day. However, those who lived through the Liberation War witnessed firsthand the oppression and deprivation imposed by the Pakistani elite. Fakhrul stressed that this struggle laid the foundation for the fight for an independent state.
He further claimed that some individuals, with the cooperation of political forces opposed to independence, orchestrated the murder of intellectuals. 'History proves this today. There is no scope to take this matter lightly,' Fakhrul asserted.
Drawing parallels to recent events under the Awami League's rule over the past 15-16 years, Fakhrul criticized the deterioration of the education system, healthcare, and the economy. Despite these challenges, he emphasized the nation's resilience and strength to overcome adversity and oppression.
Fakhrul referenced the July uprising, suggesting a new possibility had emerged by removing those responsible for years of what he described as fascist rule. Despite challenges, he acknowledged some positive changes under the interim government. He also recalled the 2016 presentation of 'Vision-2030' by BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and the adoption of a 31-point program to combat fascism under the guidance of acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
He concluded by expressing confidence that the people of Bangladesh have the courage to overcome conspiracies and move forward. Fakhrul emphasized that the BNP plays a significant role in this struggle, despite facing numerous challenges, including legal cases and the loss of activists. He reiterated the commitment to realizing a prosperous and democratic Bangladesh through elections, fulfilling the vision of BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Begum Khaleda Zia, and Tarique Rahman. Fakhrul emphasized the BNP's dedication to advancing through democratic means.
