Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today stated that numerous attempts have been made to dismantle the BNP during 15 years of Awami League's rule, as the party strives to restore democracy.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul emphasized the resilience of the BNP, likening it to a phoenix that rises from challenges, while embodying the ideals of Bangladeshi nationalism and principles set by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia. His comments came after he paid tribute at the mausoleum of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, marking the BNP's 47th founding anniversary.
Fakhrul highlighted the significant hurdles faced by the party, stating that approximately 6 million cases have been filed against BNP members, with around 20,000 activists killed and 1,700 subjected to enforced disappearances. He also acknowledged the leadership of the party's acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, who has led the struggle for democracy from exile.
Fakhrul expressed gratitude for the eventual liberation from what he described as a "dreadful fascist regime" by divine grace and public movements. He stressed the importance of ensuring the upcoming election, scheduled for next February, is conducted freely and fairly.
He noted that the BNP has fully cooperated with the Reform Commission to address reform proposals, laying the groundwork for future political changes. Fakhrul mentioned the introduction of a 31-point programme by the BNP, aiming for significant political and ethical changes should the party come to power.
Fakhrul praised the contributions of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman to Bangladeshi politics, noting his role in ensuring press freedom, fundamental rights, the independence of the judiciary, and the introduction of a free-market economy. He credited President Zia with the development of the garment industry and export processes, and highlighted Begum Khaleda Zia's efforts in reinstating the parliamentary democratic system and introducing the caretaker government system.
The event was attended by BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed, Chairperson's Adviser Aman Ullah Aman, and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, among others.
