Dhaka: Expatriate Bangladeshis sent US$2,422 million in remittances in August, reflecting an increase of around 8.9 percent compared to the same month in the previous year. This growth highlights the vital role of remittances in Bangladesh's economy.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, expatriate wage earners contributed $2,224 million in remittances to the country in August 2024. This year, the year-on-year growth in remittances for the first two months of the fiscal year 2026, July to August, reached 18.4 percent, with a total of $4,900 million received. In comparison, the previous year saw remittances totaling $4,138 million during the same period.
A senior official from the central bank, speaking to BSS, noted that the upward trend in remittance inflow is linked to the government's efforts to streamline legal channels, encouraging non-resident Bangladeshis to send money home. These measures are expected to continue bolstering the economy by facilitating smoother and more secure transactions for expatriates.
