Dhaka: Fisheries, Livestock, and Agriculture Minister Mohammad Aminur Rashid today urged the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to work jointly for the development of the agriculture and fisheries sector. ‘The DCs have important role for agriculture and fisheries sector development because the people have close connection with the field administration,’ he said while addressing as the chief guest at a session of the DC conference 2026 held at Osmani Memorial auditorium here.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the government is prioritizing the agricultural sector by implementing initiatives like farmer cards, credit facilities, and the distribution of free fertilizer, seed, and pesticides, aligning with the electoral manifesto of BNP. Rashid emphasized that strengthening the financial position of farmers would in turn bolster the country’s overall economy, given that 75 to 90 percent of the population is directly or indirectly involved with agriculture.

Rashid also highlighted the need for increasing the production of indigenous fish, which are facing extinction due to habitat damage. The government plans to develop community-based fisheries sanctuaries to naturally boost fisheries production and ensure fish availability for the populace.

Expressing concern over the overuse of pesticides, Rashid noted the detrimental impact on soil fertility and the environment. The government is focusing on modern, eco-friendly pesticide use, with steps underway to regulate excessive pesticide application. Additionally, efforts are being made to enhance local shrimp fry production capacity, and strict regulations will be imposed on shrimp fry imports to reduce infection risks.

State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, addressing the conference as a special guest, acknowledged the DCs’ crucial role in the country’s development and administration. Tuku also referred to a government program providing food assistance to nearly 40,000 fishermen for two months, with a budget of Taka 24 crore, alongside the Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) initiative.

Other notable speakers at the event included State Minister for Public Administration M Abdul Bari, agriculture secretary Rafiqul I Mohammad, fisheries and livestock secretary M Delwar Hossain, and food secretary Abu Taher M Masud Rana.
