Rangpur: Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs Md Mofidur Rahman has emphasized the significance of archaeological sites in enriching research and providing tourists with insights into civilization, culture, and lifestyle. "The Rangpur region is highly rich in important archaeological sites which attract hundreds of tourists," he stated during a virtual discussion following the inauguration of the Rangpur Regional Director's Office of the Department of Archaeology.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was marked by the formal inauguration of the Rangpur Regional Director's Office by Director General of the Department of Archaeology Sabina Alam in the Guptapara area of Rangpur city. Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal presided over the discussion held at the conference room of the newly inaugurated office.
Regional Director of the Department of Archaeology for Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions, AKM Saifur Rahman, showcased a documentary on archaeological artifacts from eight districts of the Rangpur division during the programme. The new office, described by the chief guest as the fifth divisional level office in the country, aims to enhance the activities of the Department of Archaeology and foster 'Heritage Tourism.'
The Secretary highlighted the economic benefits of 'Heritage Tourism' and stressed the importance of community-level awareness and involvement of travel content creators to attract more tourists. He urged the preservation of regional antiquities, underlining their cultural significance.
Director General Sabina Alam remarked on the importance of archaeological artifacts in providing insights into the social, political, and cultural lifestyle of people. She noted that understanding history contributes to a nation's prosperity and expressed hope that the new office would energize efforts in artifact preservation and renovation.
The event also featured speeches from Rangpur Divisional Commissioner (Routine Responsibilities) Md Abu Jafar, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs Md Saiful Islam, Deputy Director (Administration) of the Department of Archaeology Md Kamal Hossain, and other notable guests, highlighting the collaborative efforts in advancing the preservation of heritage sites in the region.
