Rangpur: The High Court on Sunday upheld the death penalty of two convicts and acquitted five suspects in a case filed over the killing of a khadem of a shrine in Rangpur. The HC bench of Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Shathika Hossain passed the order after hearing the death references and appeal petitions in the case.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the two condemned convicts are Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) Commander Masud Rana and Liton Mia. Those acquitted include JMB member Ishak Ali, Shakhawat Hossain alias Rahul, Sarwar Hossain Sabu alias Mizan, Bijoy alias Ali alias Darji, who is a commander of the JMB northern region, and Chandu Mia.
Earlier in 2018, a Rangpur court sentenced seven people to death for the killing of the khadem of Rangpur Shrine, Rahmat Ali. The court also acquitted six others as the allegations brought against them could not be proved.
On November 10, 2015, Rahmat Ali, a khadem of a shrine at Choitar intersection of Kaunia upazila of Rangpur district, was stabbed to death while returning to his home. Subsequently, a murder case was filed with Kaunia Police Station.
