Dhaka: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two brothers from the Niribili area under Ashulia police station in Dhaka on Sunday evening in connection with the murder of a Rangpur man by consuming poisoned alcohol.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the detainees are Rafiqul Islam, 45, and Md Shafiqul Islam, 40, sons of Soleman Mia of village Khordo Komarpur under Mithapukur police station of Rangpur. This information was released by RAB-13’s Senior Assistant Director (Media) and Additional Superintendent of Police Biplab Kumar Goswami.
The statement of the murder case filed by the victim’s maternal uncle, Zahidul Islam, indicates that an enmity had developed with the victim over the sale of illegal drugs by the accused. As a result, Md Rafiqul Islam allegedly lured the victim and his three friends to his fruit garden, where they were made to consume excessive amounts of poisoned liquor on the night of May 30, 2026.
Following the incident, victim Md Saju Mia, 55, and others fell seriously ill, prompting Zahidul Islam to admit Saju Mia to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Unfortunately, Saju Mia succumbed to his ailments on June 1, 2026, at 2.10 pm. The victim’s three friends also died at different times.
In light of these events, Zahidul Islam filed a murder case against the accused at Mithapukur police station on June 2, 2026. Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of RAB-13 from Rangpur and RAB-04 from Savar in Dhaka conducted a raid in the Niribili area under Ashulia police station, arresting the two main accused at 6.15 pm on Sunday.
The arrestees have been handed over to Mithapukur police station for further legal action.
