Dhaka: The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) today apprehended the prime suspect in the killing of a schoolteacher during a snatching incident near the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, along with his accomplice, and seized the motorcycle allegedly used in the crime.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the arrested suspect has been identified as Md. Mosharraf Hossain, also known by several aliases including Panni, Panni Gazi, and Para Panni. RAB-2 described him as a professional snatcher and a key member of a snatching gang. His accomplice was also arrested, as confirmed in a press release.
RAB-2's intelligence and technology-assisted investigation revealed that the two suspects were residing in the East Tejturi Bazar area under the jurisdiction of Tejgaon Police Station. Acting on this information, an RAB-2 team conducted a special operation in the area, successfully capturing Mosharraf and his associate within 24 hours of the incident. Additionally, a Yamaha R15 motorcycle, believed to have been used in the killing, was seized.
The owner of the motorcycle, Rakib, informed RAB during interrogation that the bike was in Panni Gazi's possession on the day of the incident. The victim's husband, Abdul Matin, corroborated the statement, confirming the motorcycle's involvement in the attack.
The victim, Ranjila Parvin, aged 55, served as the head-teacher of Bagbari Government Primary School in Gabtali upazila of Bogura. The investigation detailed that Ranjila Parvin and her husband were traveling by rickshaw from Gabtali to the capital's Farmgate area for medical treatment on Saturday morning. As their rickshaw reached the southern plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban around 6:30 am, two snatchers on a motorcycle approached and snatched her bag. During the incident, she fell from the rickshaw and sustained severe head injuries. She was transported to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Following the incident, Abdul Matin filed a murder case against two unidentified snatchers with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. The case was registered on August 29 under Sections 394, 302, and 34 of the Penal Code.
Preliminary investigations by RAB indicate that Mosharraf was involved in snatching and other criminal activities across different parts of Dhaka, including Tejgaon and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. He faces 13 cases filed against him with various police stations. His criminal record includes three drug-related cases with Hatirjheel, Adabor, and Kafrul police stations; six cases involving theft, attempted theft, and intimidation with Bhatara, Mohammadpur, Kafrul, Badda, and Shahjahanpur police stations; three cases involving theft and attempted theft with Adabor, Khilgaon, and Kamrangirchar police stations; and one case for preparation to commit robbery with Chandpur Model Police Station.
RAB stated that legal proceedings against the arrested suspects are currently underway.
