Dhaka: Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh (PWAB) today demanded formulation of a policy for the movement of small vehicles, including battery-powered rickshaws. The association emphasized the potential economic benefits and regulatory framework needed for these vehicles. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the association has claimed that the government could earn revenue worth Tk 5,000 crore annually if 40 lakh battery-run auto-rickshaws are registered and licenses are issued to the drivers through the city corporations, municipalities, and upazila parishads. This revenue could significantly contribute to the national economy, highlighting the importance of a structured policy. PWAB Secretary General Md. Mozammel Haque Chowdhury made the demand in a press conference held at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU). The event gathered several key figures and stakeholders in the transportation sector, indicating widespread support for the proposed policy changes. Among those who spoke at the press confere nce were Prof Robaet Ferdous of Dhaka University's Mass Communication and Journalism department, convener of Rickshaw, Battery Rickshaw, Van and Easy Bike Sangram Parishad Khalekuzzaman Lipon, and general secretary of Chittagong Electric Three Wheeler Vehicle Owners and Drivers Oikya Parishad Md. Siddique Mia. Their participation underscores the collaborative effort to push for regulatory reforms in the sector.
