Dhaka: Road Transport, Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam today announced that public transport is operating with government-fixed fares ahead of Eid, ensuring smooth travel for passengers. The minister's comments came during a media briefing following his inspection of Gabtoli Bus Terminal in the capital.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister observed that most transport operators are adhering to the fixed fares. In some instances, services are even charging Taka 20 to 30 less than the approved fare, which has been a relief for passengers. To facilitate smooth transit, various control rooms and vigilance teams, including police and RAB, have been established at major terminals like Gabtoli. Fare charts are displayed for passengers to verify rates, and any overcharging can be reported immediately to control rooms for assistance.
Minister Alam highlighted the absence of significant complaints, noting that buses are departing on schedule without causing passenger harassment. Addressing fuel supply concerns during Eid, he assured that sufficient fuel has been available for public transport since March 15. Passengers facing any issues can contact helpline 16107 or the police control room for assistance.
The minister also reported an increase in vehicles crossing the Jamuna Bridge, with around 32,000 more than usual, indicating the heightened travel activity during Eid. On the issue of illegal bus counters, Alam stated that actions will be taken post-Eid to remove unauthorized facilities, urging bus owners to operate counters only at designated locations.
Regarding overcharging allegations in Dhaka's local transport services, the minister confirmed that authorities are prompt in taking action. Recently, a transport operator was fined Taka 10,000 for overcharging in the Nabinagar and Baipayl areas, with similar measures enforced in Chittagong Road area.
After the inspection, Minister Alam visited the Gabtoli bus depot of Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) to inaugurate the BRTC Eid Special Service 2026 and later inspected the ongoing construction of the Ashulia Elevated Expressway. Senior government officials, including State Minister Habibur Rashid and other dignitaries, accompanied him during the visit.
