Chattogram: Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain today emphasized that cleaning drives alone cannot resolve the city’s persistent waterlogging issues, underscoring the need for greater public awareness to ensure sustainable outcomes. He stated that the city belongs to every resident and it is the moral duty of citizens to protect the canals, drains, and reservoirs.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the mayor made these remarks while inspecting an ongoing month-long drain cleaning program in various areas of the city. The program includes cleaning efforts from the Ispahani area of Lalkhan Bazar ward to MES College and from Al-Amin Hospital to AK Khan Gate in North Pahartali ward.

Dr Shahadat instructed officials to focus on areas that suffered from severe waterlogging during the last monsoon season and to continue their monitoring efforts until the situation improves. He also urged local representatives to assist residents and raise awareness about waterlogging issues, warning that illegal occupation and filling of drains exacerbate the problem.

During the inspection, several officials were present, including Chief Conservancy Officer Captain Ikhtiar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Regional Executive Officer Abhishek Das, Public Relations and Protocol Officer Aziz Ahmed, Malaria and Mosquito Control Officer Md Sharful Islam Mahi, Deputy Chief Cleaning Officer Pranab Kumar Sharma, Mayor’s Personal Assistant Ziaur Rahman Zia, and Maruful Haque Chowdhury (Maruf).
