Protection of migrant rights stressed

DHAKA, Speakers at a seminar here today called upon

all stakeholders to work in a collaborative manner to secure the rights of

the migrants.

They also urged to identify the emerging challenges of labour migration from

South Asia.

Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) in

collaboration with the Consortium of South Asian Think Tanks (COSATT) and

Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) organized the regional Seminar titled “Labour

Migrants from South Asia: Issues and Concerns” in the capital, said a press

release.

Prime Minister’s Economic Affairs Adviser Dr Mashiur Rahman and additional

secretary of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment ministry Khairul

Alam attended the seminar as chief guest and special guest respectively.

Highlighting the contribution of labour migrants to the South Asian economy,

Ramhan expressed Bangladesh’s enthusiasm for working together with other

countries on migration issue.

BIIS Chairman Ambassador AFM Gousal Azam Sarker chaired the opening
session

while its director general Major General Md Abu Bakar Siddique Khan and

COSATT convenor Dr Nishchal N Pandey delivered the welcome addresses.

The seminar had two working sessions while Dhaka university’s political

science department chairman Professor Dr Tasneem Siddiqui chaired the first

session on “Labour Migrants from South Asia: Contemporary Challenges”.

The second session on “Addressing Challenges: Regional Cooperation and

Partnerships” was chaired by Programme Manager 2030 Agenda, KAS, Singapore,

Megha Sarmah.
