Rangpur: Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RpCCI) President Md Akbar Ali has expressed optimism that the proposed national budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 will effectively address inflation and enhance living standards across the country. In his immediate reaction to the Tk 7,90,000 crore budget, presented by Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, the RpCCI president welcomed several initiatives outlined in the proposal.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Akbar Ali highlighted that the budget aims to reduce unnecessary imports, lower government expenditure, and improve market and product supply systems. He commended the steps taken to protect local industries and the reduction in import duties on LNG, crude oil, pharmaceutical raw materials, and medical equipment. Additionally, he noted that the proposed increase in social security allowances would significantly benefit vulnerable groups, contributing to inclusive economic growth.

However, the RpCCI president cautioned that the prices of household electronics such as air conditioners, refrigerators, mobile phones, motorcycles, and various kitchen appliances might increase, placing additional burdens on lower- and middle-income families. On tobacco taxation, he warned against merely raising taxes on cigarettes without addressing the illegal sale of counterfeit cigarettes, emphasizing the need to target unscrupulous traders.

Ali also underscored the importance of strict inflation control to protect the country’s growth momentum and called for enhanced private investment by addressing macroeconomic challenges. Highlighting the significance of small and cottage industries, he stressed that sustainable economic development relies on strengthening this sector and urged for special funds in the revised budget to support grassroots-level employment.

Furthermore, Ali advocated for a special allocation in the revised budget to expedite mega projects in the Rangpur region. He emphasized the need for balanced fund distribution, transparency, accountability, and strategies to restore macroeconomic stability for economic growth and poverty alleviation.
