Dhaka: Fisheries, Livestock and Agriculture Minister Aminur Rashid emphasized the importance of proper preservation and management of hides and other by-products from sacrificial animals, highlighting their potential significant contribution to the country's economy.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister stated that hides from sacrificial animals are often donated to madrasas, and their proper preservation and management could enhance the quality of the skin and increase foreign currency earnings through leather exports. Rashid made these remarks as the chief guest at a workshop held at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) in Farmgate, Dhaka.
He noted that a large number of people are involved in animal slaughtering, skinning, meat processing, and distribution, underscoring the necessity of preparing trained manpower for these tasks. The minister pointed out that the absence of trained personnel for sensitive jobs like skinning could damage leather quality and reduce its market value.
Rashid called for the development of skilled manpower by training madrasa students and other youths during Eid-ul-Azha. This training would create earning opportunities for students and improve the quality of leather collected during the festival.
Addressing the issue of smuggled animals, the minister stressed raising awareness for the protection of local cattle farmers and national interests. He stated that Bangladesh is now self-sufficient in livestock production, with local output sufficient to meet the demand during the festival.
The minister also praised the veterinary medical teams, livestock department officials, and others for their active participation in ensuring the health and marketing management of sacrificial animals across the country. The workshop was chaired by the Director General of the Department of Livestock Services (DLS), M Shahjaman Khan.
