Dhaka: More than a simple transfer of power, the recent national election in Bangladesh marks the beginning of a new journey for the country’s democracy, according to Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus. In a televised address, Prof Yunus highlighted the significance of the event, describing it as the birth of a new Bangladesh where the people have regained their right to vote.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Prof Yunus expressed deep respect and gratitude to those who contributed to the successful execution of the election, which he described as festive, free, impartial, peaceful, clean, and credible. He paid tribute to the young protesters who took to the streets in July 2024, acknowledging the sacrifices of those who were injured or lost their lives, noting that this transformation would not have been possible without their commitment.

Reflecting on his time in office, Prof Yunus shared that the administration aimed to uphold its promises, acknowledging both successes and shortcomings while emphasizing that judgment ultimately lies with the people. He stressed that his government prioritized accountability over political interests, focusing on prosecuting crimes against humanity, corruption, and systemic irregularities without regard for partisan interests or retribution.

Prof Yunus also detailed efforts to initiate administrative, commercial, and financial reforms in fragile institutions to prevent any future government from entrenching itself against the people’s will. He recounted the precarious law and order situation his administration inherited, with empty police stations and eroded public confidence, and highlighted the steps taken to restore stability and rebuild trust in the government.
