Dhaka: National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz today announced that the commission is on the verge of concluding the final process of the historic July Charter within the next two to three days through ongoing discussions.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Ali Riaz made this announcement at the onset of the 20th day of the second phase of the commission's meeting with political parties at the Foreign Service Academy. He expressed optimism, stating, "With your cooperation, we hope that we will be able to reach the final process of a charter in the next 2-3 days." Riaz emphasized the importance of continuous talks and amendments to reach a consensus on specific points.
Riaz revealed that consensus has already been achieved on 12 issues, although two issues still have dissenting notes. He remains hopeful, citing that compromise is being made to ensure agreement. He stressed the necessity of resolving critical issues for fundamental state structure reform, including the caretaker government system, which requires a framework to prevent future conflicts.
The Vice-Chairman urged political party representatives to persist in discussions to finalize the charter soon. "We want to add important issues to the National Charter; present it to the nation and sign it together to create a historical document that will include the roadmap of the future of Bangladesh," Riaz stated, acknowledging that not all issues can be included, but only those crucial for state reform are being considered.
The commission is prepared to send a draft of the July Charter to political parties during today's meeting. The agenda includes topics such as the appointment of the Public Service Commission, the Anti-Corruption Commission, the Auditor General and the Ombudsman, and women's representation in parliament.
Representatives from 30 political parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), Gono Odhikar Parishad, Gana Sanghati, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Biplobi Workers Party, and Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party, participated in the discussions. The meeting also featured Commission members Justice Emdadul Haque, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder, Dr. Md Ayub Mia, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Safar Raj Hossain, and Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Monir Haider.
