Rio de janeiro: Britain’s Prince William engaged in a friendly football match with Brazil’s former footballer Cafu and discussed environmental issues with global youth in Rio de Janeiro. This marks the prince’s inaugural visit to Brazil, which is primarily centered around his Earthshot Prize, awarding £1 million to innovative environmental projects.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prince William, after spending three days in Rio, will proceed to the Amazon rainforest to speak at the COP30 UN climate talks on behalf of King Charles. Arriving shortly after a violent police raid resulted in 121 deaths near the international airport, William ascended the Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf Mountain) and received the city’s keys from Mayor Eduardo Paes.

During their meeting, Mayor Paes shared insights into Rio’s landscape, politics, and security challenges, especially after the recent police clash with the Red Command gang. While residents criticized the police for alleged executions, there remains strong public support for actions against the city’s gangs.

Prince William also visited the Maracana stadium, receiving a Brazil jersey from Cafu and playing football with children. He later participated in discussions with young leaders from different regions under his Generation Earthshot programme, urging them to be proactive in addressing climate issues.

The Earthshot Awards ceremony, set for Wednesday, promises a high-profile lineup, including performances by artists like Anitta and Kylie Minogue. Jason Knauf, CEO of The Earthshot Prize, highlighted the significant impact of past winners in environmental restoration and providing clean water.

Prince William’s visit will culminate in Belem for the COP30 climate talks, where he will deliver a speech and engage in meetings with world leaders.
