Dhaka:Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasized that if the opposition facilitates a return to autocracy while opposing the government, it would betray the martyrs of both the 2024 July uprising and the 1971 Liberation War.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Prime Minister advocated for a constructive opposition, urging political differences not to hinder cooperation on essential national issues such as employment, public safety, healthcare, education, and national independence.
During the inauguration of the July Martyrs' Memorial and the renovated Osmani Udyan, the Prime Minister noted the absence of opposition leaders, stressing the importance of unity in commemorating those who sacrificed their lives. He highlighted that political parties should collaborate on fundamental matters affecting the people's lives, regardless of differing views on constitutional amendments and other issues.
He also drew parallels between the July uprising and the Liberation War, underscoring the shared goal of establishing democratic rights and ensuring freedom of expression and voting rights. Additionally, he mentioned the government's commitment to supporting those affected by the July uprising through assistance and employment opportunities.
In his address, Prime Minister Rahman called on architects and planners to consider environmental conservation in development projects and urged citizens to maintain cleanliness in public spaces. He pointed out the need for better hygiene in hospitals and government residential areas compared to educational institutions.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several ministers and officials, including Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and Dhaka city administrators.
