Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to visit Chandpur on May 16 and Feni district on May 25. The visits are part of an initiative to inaugurate canal excavation programmes before the onset of the monsoon season, according to Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Anee shared details of the Prime Minister’s upcoming visits during a press briefing at the Bangladesh Secretariat. The minister met with Prime Minister Rahman at the Cabinet Division office at the Secretariat earlier today to discuss water resources management. The meeting, which took place at 10 am, also touched upon the progress of the Padma Barrage Project, with technical work, survey, and feasibility study nearing completion. A decision from the government regarding the project is expected soon.
Minister Anee emphasized the significance of the canal excavation programme, revealing that the Prime Minister would inaugurate these initiatives during his visits to Chandpur and Feni. The canal excavation is part of a broader government plan to excavate 20,000 kilometers of canal throughout the country over the next five years. The Prime Minister has already visited several districts to inaugurate similar programmes, demonstrating his commitment to enhancing water management infrastructure.
Minister Anee highlighted the urgency of the programme, noting that ministers and lawmakers are actively participating in their respective areas. With the monsoon season approaching, the canal excavation will continue until the end of May and is expected to resume in November, December, and January after the monsoon.
