Dhaka:Prime Minister Tarique Rahman announced that the government would consider further increasing allowances for persons with disabilities, contingent upon the country's financial capabilities. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Prime Minister made these remarks during a meeting with representatives of the Bangladesh Protibandhi Kallyan Samity (BPKS) at the Prime Minister's Office. He noted that, although allowances have been raised, they have not met the full needs of the community. Rahman assured that further increases would be pursued as financial conditions permit.
The Prime Minister emphasized the shared responsibility of the government and society to support individuals with disabilities and uphold their rights and dignity. He acknowledged that past efforts have fallen short and committed to providing maximum support.
Rahman stated that building plans without necessary facilities for individuals with disabilities would be rejected, highlighting the issuance of directives to enforce this policy. He also mentioned plans to introduce sign-language services at public institutions, aiming to assist those with hearing and speech impairments.
Additionally, the Prime Minister expressed his intention to consult with the Law Minister and Health Minister about implementing sign-language assistance in courts and hospitals. He also directed the Social Welfare Minister to explore expanding skills training, particularly in information technology, to empower individuals with disabilities towards economic self-reliance.
