Dhaka: A court here today granted a five-day remand for Zahurul, 32, the prime accused in a case filed over the death of Sub-Inspector (SI) Altaf Hossain, 58, of the Special Branch (SB) of police in Amin Bazar, Savar. SI Altaf Hossain was brutally beaten to death on September 5 in front of Abul Kalam Azad’s auto-rickshaw garage in Bardebi Westpara, Savar.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Senior Judicial Magistrate of Dhaka Ayesha Siddika granted five days of remand after hearing the arguments, as police presented Zahurul before the Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court seeking 10 days of remand. The court proceedings followed a detailed case statement outlining the events leading to the tragic incident.
The statement reveals an argument erupted around 7:30 pm on September 5 over the parking of an auto-rickshaw in front of the auto garage. SI Altaf Hossain intervened to defuse the situation but was attacked by the accused. Seeking refuge, he took shelter inside his son’s business establishment, ‘Grand Fashion.’
At approximately 8:10 pm, the accused allegedly armed themselves with locally made weapons and launched an attack on the establishment. The case statement mentions that Altaf Hossain was savagely beaten with iron rods, pipes, hammers, and sticks, leaving him critically injured. His son, Ariful Islam, sustained injuries as well when he attempted to protect his father, suffering an assault with sharp weapons.
The violence extended to the vandalization of the establishment, with damages estimated at around Tk 500,000. Additionally, Tk 220,000 was reportedly stolen from the cash box. The injured were transported to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where Altaf Hossain was pronounced dead by doctors. Ariful remains hospitalized in critical condition.
In response to the incident, SI Altaf Hossain’s wife, Sheuly Parvin, filed a murder case with Savar Police Station, leading to Zahurul’s arrest and subsequent remand.
