Dhaka:President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today emphasized the necessity of ensuring world-class healthcare services, modern technology, skilled specialist doctors, and a patient-friendly environment within Bangladesh.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, while inaugurating the 'Bangladesh Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (BSCRS) Congress-2026' at the Shaheed Abu Sayeed International Convention Centre, the President noted that many patients are compelled to seek advanced treatment abroad, resulting in significant financial losses for the country. He attributed this trend to limitations in specialized treatment, modern technology, expertise, service quality, and trust.
The two-day international conference, themed "Colorectal Surgery Global Innovation, Local Impact," features dignitaries and experts from both home and abroad. President Mirza Fakhrul Islam highlighted the need for a modern, affordable, and people-friendly healthcare system. He stressed the importance of improving healthcare quality, recruiting skilled manpower, utilizing modern technology, and ensuring accountability.
The President also underscored the significance of compassion and empathy in medical services, describing medical care as a noble responsibility linked to human life and dignity. He called for humane behavior towards patients, clear communication, a clean and safe environment, and special compassion for impoverished patients.
Addressing past issues in the health sector, the President criticized the lack of progress over the last 17 years due to mismanagement, corruption, and unplanned decisions. He pointed out issues such as the purchase of expensive equipment without necessary infrastructure and skilled personnel, leading to unused machines and prolonged stagnation in recruiting healthcare staff.
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam urged for realistic and well-planned initiatives, skilled manpower, people-friendly policies, accountability, and transparent fund use to advance the health sector. He also commended the current government's initiatives, including a significant budget allocation for the health sector and the plan to upgrade hospitals and expand local healthcare services.
He called for increased public awareness and early disease detection to expand access to affordable specialized treatment, especially for colorectal diseases. The President assured the organizers of the conference of his support for establishing a National Institute of Colorectal Surgery.
The conference, attended by various healthcare professionals and dignitaries, included addresses from notable figures such as Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain and BNP Standing Committee member Dr Farhad Halim Donar, among others.
