Dhaka: President Mohammed Shahabuddin returned home this morning after receiving medical treatment and health check-ups in the United Kingdom (UK). A commercial aircraft (flight BG-202) of the Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying the President and his entourage members landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 10:50am, according to a spokesman of the Bangabhaban Press Wing this noon.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Yousef S. Y. Ramadan, British High Commission Counsellor Alison J Cross, and secretaries and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister’s Office, and President’s Office were present at the airport to receive the President. Earlier, on doctors’ advice, the Head of State left Dhaka for London on May 9 for follow-up treatment and medical examinations.

On May 12, an angiogram was performed on the President under the supervision of interventional cardiologist Dr. Stephen Holley at Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge. A serious blockage was detected in his heart during the procedure, prompting immediate angioplasty, and a stent was implanted subsequently. The President’s physical condition is now stable and satisfactory, as reported by the President’s personal physicians.

In October 2023, the President underwent cardiac bypass surgery in Singapore. Despite undergoing treatment and health check-ups in the UK, President Shahabuddin continued to execute official duties by digitally approving and signing important summaries and documents sent from different ministries. Additionally, during his visit, the President held an informal courtesy meeting with Sudanese Prime Minister Dr. Kamil Idris at the Hilton Hotel in London.
