Jakarta:President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for empathy and respect towards individuals experiencing mental health issues, highlighting the importance of proper mental healthcare and support from families and communities.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, President Alamgir, in a message ahead of World Mental Health Day 2026, urged the strengthening of mental health awareness campaigns at health centers and educational institutions, along with public and private initiatives. This is part of a broader effort to ensure the mental well-being of all citizens, as the country joins global celebrations of the day.

The President noted that mental health is vital to overall well-being, work capacity, and quality of life. He pointed to challenges such as changing global circumstances, economic instability, social unrest, loneliness, drug addiction, and family and workplace pressures as factors significantly affecting mental health.

He further emphasized that mental well-being is as crucial as physical health. This year’s theme, 'Lived Experiences Heard Real Voices, Real Change', was described by the President as significant, underlining the need to listen to those directly affected by mental health issues and consider their insights in policymaking and service planning.

The government has initiated efforts to integrate mental health services into primary healthcare, making them more accessible to the population. President Alamgir also stressed the role of families and communities in recognizing mental health challenges and ensuring access to appropriate care.

He urged the public to seek proper medical treatment for mental health issues and to avoid unscientific practices like faith healing. President Alamgir expressed optimism that collective efforts would contribute to building a mentally healthy and productive nation, and he extended his best wishes for the success of all programs marking World Mental Health Day 2026.
