Dhaka:President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday emphasized the need for preserving the authentic history of the War of Liberation and ensuring due recognition and dignity for genuine freedom fighters.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the President made these remarks during a meeting with a 12-member delegation from the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council led by Convenor Freedom Fighter Naim Jahangir at Bangabhaban. The President's Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam briefed reporters following the meeting.
The President stated that it is the state's responsibility to honor and dignify the freedom fighters and to compile an authentic list of genuine freedom fighters. He highlighted the importance of exercising responsibility and caution in preserving and presenting the history of the War of Liberation to avoid confusion or ambiguity.
Mirza Fakhrul also stressed the significance of continuing Bangladesh's democratic journey by prioritizing national interests. He underlined the necessity of safeguarding the country's independence, sovereignty, and the historical values of the War of Liberation.
During the meeting, the delegation presented various demands and concerns related to the welfare of freedom fighters. They alleged that fake freedom fighters had been included in the official list during a previous authoritarian regime and that the history and ideals of the War of Liberation had been distorted for political purposes. They informed the President of their plan to organize a peaceful gathering independently.
The President listened to the delegation’s concerns and assured them that the issues raised regarding the welfare, honor, and dignity of freedom fighters would be duly considered. The meeting included senior members of the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council along with its Dhaka Metropolitan unit, as well as the President’s military secretary, secretary, and press secretary.
